Cholesterol and Dyslipidemia Treatment in Jujo | Jujo Station Haru Internal Medicine Clinic

十条でコレステロール・脂質異常症の治療|十条駅ハル内科クリニック

Many people who have been told they have high LDL cholesterol during a health checkup leave it untreated because they have no symptoms. However, dyslipidemia is a disease that progresses atherosclerosis without symptoms, increasing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. If you receive such a warning, we recommend visiting an internist as soon as possible.

👉 Same-day walk-in appointments are available. Please feel free to consult us first.

What is Dyslipidemia?

Dyslipidemia refers to a condition where LDL cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood are high, or HDL cholesterol is low. It is one of the biggest risk factors for atherosclerosis, and when combined with high blood pressure, diabetes, or smoking, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases sharply.

Diagnostic Criteria

Item

Reference Value

LDL Cholesterol (Bad)

140mg/dL or higher → Hyper LDL-cholesterolemia

HDL Cholesterol (Good)

Less than 40mg/dL → Hypo HDL-cholesterolemia

Triglycerides (TG)

150mg/dL or higher (fasting) → Hypertriglyceridemia

non-HDL Cholesterol

170mg/dL or higher

If your health checkup indicates "further examination needed" or "treatment needed," it is important to confirm your current condition with a blood test.

What happens if dyslipidemia is left untreated?

If high LDL cholesterol persists, plaque (fatty deposits) accumulates in the blood vessel walls, causing the arteries to harden and narrow. If this progresses, it can suddenly lead to myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, or peripheral arterial disease. Once these occur, recovery can be difficult, so management before symptoms appear is crucial.

Lifestyle Improvement

In mild cases, lifestyle improvements are the first step.

Improvement

Key Points

Diet

Reduce saturated fats (meat fat, butter), increase blue fish, soybeans, and vegetables

Exercise

Aerobic exercise for 150+ minutes per week (brisk walking, swimming, etc.)

Smoking Cessation

Increases HDL, significantly lowers cardiovascular risk

Moderation of Alcohol

Especially important for those with high triglycerides

Weight Management

A 5% weight reduction often improves LDL and TG levels

About Drug Therapy

If lifestyle changes alone do not achieve the target levels, or if the cardiovascular risk is high, drug therapy will be used in combination.

Drug Type

Representative Drug

Main Effect

Statins

Rosuvastatin, Atorvastatin

First-line treatment for LDL reduction

Ezetimibe

Ezetimibe

Further reduction when used with statins

For especially high triglycerides

EPA preparations

Icosapent ethyl

Triglyceride reduction, cardiovascular protection

Many people are concerned about the side effects of statins, but side effects such as muscle pain are relatively rare, and they can be used safely with regular blood tests.

Target LDL levels vary by risk

Risk Category

Target LDL

Low Risk

<160mg/dL

Moderate Risk

<140mg/dL

High Risk (with diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.)

<120mg/dL

History of coronary artery disease or cerebral infarction

<100mg/dL
