👉 Same-day visits without an appointment are also possible. Please feel free to consult us first.
What is Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis of the Shoulder)?
Frozen shoulder is medically known as "adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder." It is an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the shoulder joint (joint capsule, rotator cuff, bursa, etc.), causing pain and restricted range of motion.
Typical Course
|
Stage |
Symptoms |
|
Acute Phase (Inflammatory Stage) |
Severe pain at rest and at night. Intense pain if forced to move. |
|
Chronic Phase (Freezing Stage) |
Pain subsides, but the shoulder stiffens and becomes difficult to move. |
|
Recovery Phase |
Range of motion gradually recovers. Appropriate rehabilitation is important. |
While it can heal naturally, if left untreated, the stiffness (frozen shoulder) can persist, and recovery may take 1 to 2 years. Early treatment can shorten this period.
Treatment for Frozen Shoulder
Acute Phase (Period of severe pain)
-
Pain control with anti-inflammatory drugs and patches
-
Injections into the shoulder joint (steroids, hyaluronic acid) to reduce inflammation
-
Maintain rest while moving within a pain-free range
Chronic to Recovery Phase (Period to regain range of motion)
-
Stretching and exercise therapy to expand the shoulder's range of motion
-
Heat therapy (increases flexibility by warming)
-
Continue injections if pain persists
Shoulder pain may be due to conditions other than frozen shoulder.
